Trust in Others and in Oneself

Listening to the Living

Humans have learned to look. We look at the sky, we look at cells, we look at blood, we look at organs, we look at the brain, we look at the heart. And when we cannot look directly, we invent an instrument to look in our place. The microscope allows us to see what our eye cannot distinguish. The telescope brings closer to what is too far. Ultrasound transforms information inaccessible to the eye into an image he can interpret. The electrocardiogram sketches the activity of the heart; the electroencephalogram sketches the activity of the brain. Humanity look, and then we explain what we have observed.

This method has allowed us to understand a considerable part of the world. It would be absurd to deny it. But one question remains: what happens when information exists without being immediately visible? Man, still searches for a way to transform it into an image. Why? Why always the image? We possess several senses. We hear. We touch. We feel temperature. We perceive pressure. We can be awakened by a sound even before understanding what produced it. Yet, in our modern conception of knowledge, seeing often remains the ultimate reassurance. Seeing is believing. One must see to demonstrate. One must see, to understand. What if the problem lies right there?
